"The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own. No apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on, or blame. The gift is yours -- it is an amazing journey -- and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins." -- B Moawad, author

International Living Postcards—your daily escape
Tuesday, May 30, 2017

Dear International Living Reader,

Tom from Mississippi likes the idea of moving to Malaysia. It's English-speaking, exotic, and a little off the beaten path as far as most U.S. expats are concerned. "It's not the kind of place you usually hear about," he told me as we sat chatting about his plans and his experience at the conference. IL Malaysia Correspondent Keith Hockton's presentation piqued Tom's interest.

Tom's not just some guy I met in a bar. Well, I did meet him in a bar...but it was a swanky cocktail lounge in the Westin hotel in Atlanta and Tom was there because, as a Lifetime Society member, he was attending our VIP cocktail reception. While we chatted, guests shared cocktails and canapes with our editors and correspondents to the dulcet tones of a live smooth jazz band. Across the room I could see three attendees shooting the breeze with IL Roving Latin America Editor Jason Holland over glasses of wine.

You see, I recently attended our Fast Track Your Retirement Overseas Conference in Atlanta. Our editors and correspondents from across the globe spoke at the event and their talks were by turns informative, witty, and compelling. But, most importantly for me, I also got to meet face-to-face with readers, just like you, who are in the process of planning their lives overseas.

While Tom likes Malaysia, it might be too humid for his wife. Coming from Mississippi, they're all too used to sweaty days and sticky weather. For their retirement, they're looking for a drier climate and somewhere with a bit of variety. Europe appeals to them—particularly the idea that they could travel for only a matter of hours and find themselves in a new country with a vastly different culture. France doesn't seem quite the right fit for Tom and his wife, but Spain or Portugal might be possibilities...that's if Tom doesn't get his way with Malaysia.

Luckily, since Tom is a Lifetime Society member, all the information he and his wife need to make their decision is at their fingertips. Every issue of International Living magazine is his for free, pages bursting with articles on life overseas. And with steep discounts on every IL product—from country reports to courses—he's in a great position to drill down into the countries he's interested in to make the most informed decision possible. (You can become a member of this special group here.)

Tom particularly likes the back-and-forth of talking in person with someone who has been to the places he is considering...and that's another benefit of his Lifetime Society membership. Keith Hockton, who turned Tom onto Malaysia, was present at the VIP cocktail reception, as was Glynna Prentice, our expert on Spain.

This is the kind of exclusive access readers get when they join our "inner circle." Lifetime Society members get VIP treatment at every IL event, which includes members-only invitations to formal receptions. They also gain entrance to the exclusive VIP lounge throughout the event—a private sanctuary where members can grab a seat, chill out, enjoy some tasty snacks and drinks, and mix with IL staff and experts between talks.

Speaking of exclusive access, Lifetime Society members also get their own exclusive publication. The Lifetime Society Communique is not available to anyone else...the only way to read it is to become one of the elite 1% of IL readers who join this select club. The Communique features in-depth articles for our most loyal readers and is free, for life, to members.

The doors to membership of this select group aren't open often...but they are right now, for a limited time. So now's your chance. Until midnight tomorrow you too can take your place as a member of the International Living family. Become a member now.

Even though Tom and his wife are still in the early stages of making their minds up about where they'd like to retire overseas, I'm confident they'll make the decision that's right for them. As members of the International Living family, they're going into it with over 35 years of live-overseas experience behind them. And if after a year...two years...10 years they decide to move again, they'll still have us backing them up—family is for life.
